Womens' pride shows up in a single slap, Thappad and her compulsions in the multiple ones

We saw yesterday a movie, Thappad (slap) at Chandigarh. It is quite sensitive movie dealing with self-esteem and honour of the woman, Amrita (portrayed by Taapsee Pannu) who prides herself as home maker finding happiness in the achievements of her husband, Vikram (protrayed by Pavail Gulati). However, Amrita finds herself at the crossroad when she is (inadvertently or/and in frustration) slapped by her husband in the party in the heat of angry moments quarrelling with Sr colleague in the party, when he is informed that some one else (foreigner) will be his senior despite his being CEO in the London office where he was just selected. Amrita deserts him to be with her parents, as she finds her life loveless while her husband Vikram initiates legal action. Neither realising his own mistakes, nor listening to the sane advice, Vikram never apologises for his mis-behaviour towards his wife (Amrita), offering just excuses and citing pressures of office politics. It is at this time, Amrita realises her own sacrifices for her husband, without any expression of gratitude on behalf of her husband; and for having been taken for granted all these years of married life. This is very typical of man's psyche, not to apologize for own mistake and seek an explanation elsewhere or believe in what he does is just fine. In the meantime, it is known that Amrita is pregnant for the past two months. The stage is now set for messy divorce, that Amrita never wanted to be so. Thappad (facial slap) is very moving portrayal of emotions in the marriages without love. It is thought provoking. Acting of Taapsee Pannu is superb. Others equally good. Dialogues crisp, not long drawn but simple and light, Parents standing behind supporting the daughter despite likelihood of snide tradtiional backlash against their divorcee (only one slap having led to divorce) and support of sister-in-law is appreciated.
On the contrary is also a portrayal of compulsion of a maid servant who bears brunt (slaps) of her drunkard husband every time they see one another and husband getting angry at every excuse. Here is another daughter who is abondoned by her parents and who feels helpless due to economic reasons.
Women empowerment has to come through education and economic independence. It is only then that we can have gender equality in true sense and societal renaissance particularly issues that matter women.

PS: My relative informed me about wife deserting her husband of 20 years of married life, as she believed the rumours of her husband having affairs with maid servant. An aberration of this kind is far removed from realities, the women face in general and too often.

PS caution: Highly recommended for all those who are about to marry or are married, but not together, after seeing staring of my beloved wife while discussing the movie😜. Let old wounds remain closed, having seen spin off of more separations in the movie itself.
Jai HO (Long live) Happy International Women's Day😀
